Different image formats have different strengths — JPG compresses photographs efficiently, PNG preserves transparency, WebP outperforms both for web use, and AVIF is the newest standard with the best compression ratios. Our converter switches between these formats in seconds so you always have the right file type for the platform.

Choosing the right format for the right platform

Website developers optimising for speed convert JPGs and PNGs to WebP, which is 25–35% smaller at equivalent visual quality — directly improving Core Web Vitals scores. Print designers who receive WebP files from clients need to convert them to PNG or JPG before opening in Photoshop or sending to a printer. Android app developers need icons as WebP; iOS apps require PNG. Shopee and Lazada require JPG for product listings but PNG for transparent-background product shots on white. Social media platforms differ: Facebook accepts JPG and PNG, while some require specific aspect ratios and formats for display ads.

Tips for best results

For web portfolios and e-commerce: convert everything to WebP for the fastest load times.

For printing: always use PNG (lossless) or JPG at quality 90+ — never WebP or AVIF for print workflows.

Converting a JPG to PNG does not recover the quality lost when the JPG was first created — it only changes the container format.

AVIF offers the best compression of all formats but is not supported in older browsers (pre-2021 Chrome, Safari 16+ only). Test browser compatibility before deploying AVIF on public websites.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does converting from PNG to JPG remove the transparent background?

Yes. JPG does not support transparency — transparent areas are filled with white. If you need transparency in a compressed format, convert to WebP or AVIF instead.

Converting JPG to PNG makes the file much larger — is that normal?

Yes. PNG uses lossless compression and is inherently larger than JPEG for photographic content. Use this conversion only when you need transparency or when the PNG will undergo further editing (editing lossless files avoids accumulating quality degradation).

Can I convert a multi-frame GIF to WebP?

Static frames of GIFs are converted as still images. Animated GIF-to-WebP conversion is not supported in this tool — only the first frame is extracted.

Does the converted file keep the original EXIF metadata?

EXIF metadata (camera model, GPS, date) is stripped during conversion. This is standard practice for web assets and helps reduce file size and protect privacy.

Is AVIF format widely supported for email attachments?

No. Email clients have spotty AVIF support. For email attachments, use JPG or PNG which every email client displays correctly.
