PNG files are lossless and full-featured but often unnecessarily large for photographic content. Converting to JPG applies perceptual compression that reduces file size dramatically while keeping visual quality high — ideal for web images, email attachments, and any scenario where storage or bandwidth matters.
When PNG-to-JPG conversion reduces unnecessary overhead
Screenshots saved on Mac and Windows default to PNG, which is appropriate for interface captures but excessive for sharing a product screenshot with a client via email. Converting reduces a 2 MB screenshot to 150–400 KB without visible loss. Canva project exports default to PNG for quality, but when the result is a non-transparent product banner or social media post, JPG at quality 80 is half the size. Web pages that load many PNG images for content that has no transparency slow down significantly — converting those to JPG improves Core Web Vitals and reduces hosting bandwidth costs.
How to use PNG to JPG — step by step
Upload the PNG
Drop your PNG file. Transparent areas will be filled with white in the JPG output.
Convert
Click Process File. The image is re-encoded as JPEG at high quality.
Download the JPG
The compressed JPG downloads at the same pixel dimensions as the input PNG, significantly smaller in file size.
Tips for best results
Never convert PNG files that contain transparency to JPG if that transparency is meaningful — the transparent areas become white.
For screenshots with UI text and sharp edges, quality 85–90 is recommended to prevent JPEG artefacts around text characters.
Photographic PNG exports from Canva, Figma, or Sketch convert very well to JPG at quality 80 with minimal visible difference.
Check the output on a retina display — JPG artefacts are more noticeable at high pixel density if quality is set below 75.
Frequently Asked Questions
How much smaller will the JPG be compared to the PNG?
Photographs typically reduce by 70–85%. Screenshots of UIs reduce by 50–70%. Illustrations with flat colours compress 30–60%. Results vary significantly based on image content.
What quality setting is used for the conversion?
The conversion uses a high-quality JPEG encoding (approximately quality 85) that balances file reduction with visual fidelity. This is not user-configurable in the JPG converter; use the Compress Image tool if you want a specific quality level.
I have a PNG with a drop shadow — how will it look in JPG?
Drop shadows that fade to transparent will fade to white instead in the JPG output, since JPG cannot represent transparency. The shadow effect will still look natural on a white background but will appear incorrect on coloured backgrounds.
Can I convert a PNG icon with transparency to JPG for use on a website?
You can, but you should not if the icon is used on non-white backgrounds. JPG fills the transparent areas with white, which will look wrong on coloured backgrounds. Use WebP to get compressed images with transparency support.
Can multiple PNGs be converted to JPG in one upload?
One file per upload. Process each PNG individually and download each JPG separately.
